On April 27, 1965, more than 4,500 students and faculty gathered on campus to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak on racial injustice and the moral urgency of ending segregation. Coming just one month after the Selma-to-Montgomery march, his address called for racial integration, expanded educational opportunity, and guaranteed voting rights. King also challenged students to take action, urging them to help advance voter registration efforts across the South. In a moment that resonated far beyond
