East Indians began arriving in Jamaica in 1845, as indentured labourers to work in sugar plantations. Over 170 years later their descendants continue to impact Jamaica’s culture and heritage, with their most distinctive retentions visible in their food, clothing and music. Each year the National Council for Indian Culture observes Indian Arrival Day, showcasing various elements of Jamaica’s East Indian heritage.
