The British postbox was invented by Anthony Trollope — the Victorian novelist — who borrowed the idea from France while sorting out the Channel Islands postal service in 1852. The mainland got its first one in Carlisle in 1853. They were originally dark green, designed to blend into the landscape. The problem was they blended in too well.
