*PLEASE NOTE* We saved the snared tapir in the video successfully. This was taken as the rangers (hidden to protect their identities) worked out how to release it safely. Fortunately, they succeeded and the tapir bolted for shelter, severely stressed, but otherwise unharmed. Yet many aren’t so lucky. Those that aren’t found by patrols will die in a struggle that can last days. The agony is inconceivable. So please help put more patrols into the forest to reach them. If everyone reading this dona

What’s a tapir? This shy species is the largest indigenous mammal in Central America (its closest relative is the rhino!). In an effort to protect the tapir’s dwindling population, National Geographic Photo Ark ZSL EDGE of Existence Fellow Marina Rivero is working to develop an effective conservation strategy. By gathering information on local threats within the Protected Area La Frailesca in Chiapas, Mexico, she hopes to protect the future of this unique species. #EarthDay | National Geographic

This rare footage of a mating pair of Baird’s tapirs—Central America’s largest land mammal and an endangered species—was captured deep in the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve. Moments like this are only possible thanks to the presence of functioning camera traps. But the current project is in urgent need of rebuilding. We’re partnering with The Wild Cat Imaging Project to relaunch and expand the camera trap program at Cloudbridge, creating a robust system to monitor elusive species like jaguars, pumas

Why we should all love tapirs 🌱 Patrícia Medici is a world-leading expert in Brazil's lowland tapirs, large herbivores whose seed dispersal function is fundamental to rainforest ecosystems, including the Amazon. "Tapirs move very long distances and they connect different habitats, "says Medici, "they're the gardeners of the forest, very powerful seed dispersers". Tapirs, also known as “the #gardeners of the forest”, play a critical role in #tropical #forests as #seeddispersers.🐾 🌴 Today, there are four extant species of tapirs including the #Brazilian tapir and the #CentralAmerican tapir. Due to illegal hunting and destruction of #habitat, all four of these species are classified on the IUCN Red List as #endangered or vulnerable to extinction. 🚫 🤝 We partner with local and #indigenous communities to protect tropical forests by strengthening tradition

Zooming into the weekend like Inca the mountain tapir! Did you know that mountain tapirs are able to run at speeds of 29 mph? "Watching Inca run and play is fun for our visitors and staff alike," says Animal Keeper Roxane Losey. "It also demonstrates to Animal Care staff that she is feeling well. Activity level is an important indicator of overall well-being, especially in our older animals." 📹: Rebecca Prater, Monica Richards * Speaking of the weekend, the Zoo will reopen on Saturday, Septembe

Mountain tapirs, like Inca here, are very rare. Only four remain in human care in the United States, and they all live at your Los Angeles Zoo. There are an estimated 2,500 individuals in the wild, across cloud forests of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Inca is known for her super sweet disposition, and can often be found snoozing the afternoons away, or munching on some snacks. #TapirTuesday #Tapir #Endangered #MountainTapir 📹: Animal Keeper Monica Richards | Los Angeles Zoo

Up close and personal with Mojito the mountain tapir! 😍 Mojito is 17 years old, and is known for being large, energetic, and kind. Keepers describe him as "a tall drink of water." A great day for Mojito includes swimming, snacking on delicious leaves, interacting with his keepers, and napping. Only about 2,500 mountain tapirs are estimated to remain in the wild, and just three live in human care in North America. The L.A. Zoo is home to two of them—Mojito and his sister, Inca! #Tapir #MountainT

Ever met a mountain tapir? You could! Sun., April 27 is World Tapir Day and to celebrate, Zoo guests can meet Mochi and even give him chin scratches during a special tapir keeper talk. All you need to do is reserve your e-tickets in advance (cmzoo.org) and come to the tapir yard for scheduled events! This is an incredibly rare opportunity, since Mochi is one of only three mountain tapir in human care in the United States and wild mountain tapirs are critically endangered. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Inf
