Peaking in mid-August ( Aug. 12 ), NASA considers this “the best meteor shower of the year,” noting, “With swift and bright meteors, Perseids frequently leave long ‘wakes’ of light and color behind them as they streak through Earth’s atmosphere.”

The Southern delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks the night of July 30 into the early morning hours of July 31. These faint meteors are more difficult to spot - especially if the Moon is visible. So it’s best to view them when the night sky is not illuminated by the Moon.

The Perseids run through August 23, but the peak is coming up on the nights of August 12–13 when Earth hits the dustiest part of the comet’s trail, per Weather. The moon will be almost full this year (about 84%), which could wash out a lot of the fainter meteors. The American Meteor Society says we could miss up to 75% of the action.
