SIOUX CITY, Iowa ( K C AU) — Cases of measles continue to increase across the country, including right here in Siouxland. South Dakota officials have now recorded 12 cases of the virus, and one hospitalization from the disease. Last month, the state reported just four cases.

Measles was considered eradicated in the United States in 2000. For the first time in 25 years, cases have reached a new high.

According to the CDC, a total of 1,288 confirmed measles cases were reported by 39 states so far this year. That marks the highest annual measles case tally in 33 years, when officials recorded more than 2,100 infections in 1992.

Public Health is asking New Brunswickers in Sussex or people who recently visited the region to monitor for measles symptoms and get vaccinated, following a confirmed case of the illness.
