Chinese President Xi Jinping announced a raft of measures designed to support the "Global South" at a gathering of leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies in Rio de Janeiro, China's state television CCTV reported on Monday.

President Xi Jinping has urged the G20 to continue to act as a force to improve global governance and move history forward, as this main forum for international economic cooperation is now confronting a more fragmented world economy than it was in 2008.

Sir Keir Starmer has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Brazil on Monday, the first time a British premier has shaken hands with the leader since 2018.The pair talked in Rio de Janeiro on Monday and Sir Keir pledged to have “pragmatic” discussions with the leader of the Asian economic superpower when they speak.
