OCHOPEE, Fla. (CBS12) — Florida lawmakers have been extended an invitation to visit Alligator Alcatraz. So far, the state lawmakers include Democrats Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Lois Frankel (FL-22), Darren Soto (FL-9), Maxwell Frost (FL-10) and Jared Moskowitz (FL-23).

M AGA supporters have flocked to take selfies at the Trump administration’s new Florida immigration detention center dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz,” sparking outrage from activists who have slammed the facility as “inhumane.” Trump last week toured the detention center, which is surrounded by alligator-filled swamps in the Everglades.

Jim Beever spent much of his career reviewing large developments in the Collier County area, which is where the detention center is being built.

Arrested last week in Miami-Dade, Cuban reggaeton artist Leamsy La Figura was transferred to South Florida's new immigration detention facility known as Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades. "I feel terrible not only for me, but for my daughter too," Katia Hernandez said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has previously said there would be no impacts to vegetation and there would be no paving or permanent construction at the Everglades site.
